Dead City Zens, or DCZ, is the burgeoning collective of Sydney’s most lethal underground hip hop artists. Part label, part collaboration factory, part street gang, DCZ is the imprint you’ll see on some of the freshest releases coming out of the Sydney area. The four names you need to watch to keep with the program are Deadbeat & Hazy, Big Dumb Kid, Subsketch, and Old Men of Moss Mountain, who together got this madness underway.
Hailing from NZ, Deadbeat spits fuzzy and furious fables, commanding the stage and passing the peace pipe while his partner in crime Hazy never lets up with his gritty and banging dub beats.
Big Dumb Kid takes you from his side-scrolling past into the neon hell of the future with emphatic and unforgettable rhymes, dropped over his electro-gangster production that earned him a “must-hear new producer” accolade this year.
Subsketch, having survived the hip hop wilderness of Adelaide and with a handful of purring albums under his belt, ranges everywhere from melodica-playing, Tom Waits-esque tales of dark cities to straight up balls to wall beats and rhythms, busting out a phenomenal beatbox ability if you’re lucky.
Old Men of Moss Mountain, with their unique brand of Nerd Rap Gangsta Forest Pop, will always surprise and seduce their listeners and crowds, mixing up furry beats and fast flows with huge harmonies, they need to be seen to be believed.
So with these hoodlums all releasing new cuts in the upcoming months (and having a backlog you‘d better check out) and with some incredible new artists waiting in the wings to join the DCZ cult, you’d have to be a maniac to miss anything brandishing the flag of the Dead City Zens.
